The Kerala state government declared a precautionary holiday for all educational institutions in three districts—Kollam, Idukki, and Kottayam—on May 31, in response to a red alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The red alert indicates the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall, which may lead to localized flooding, waterlogging, landslides in hilly areas, and significant disruption to daily life. District collectors have advised residents to remain indoors unless necessary and avoid travel through flood-prone zones.

Disaster management teams are on standby, and relief camps are being readied in low-lying regions. Authorities are also monitoring dams and reservoirs closely to manage potential overflow or breach scenarios. With monsoon activity picking up strength earlier than usual, Kerala’s coastal and high-range districts are bracing for continued inclement weather.
